The sea is flat and no waves are forecast for today? No problem. Portugal is much more than surfing — and days without waves are the perfect opportunity to explore everything the coast has to offer.
The Rota Vicentina, running between the Alentejo coast and the Algarve, is one of Europe's most beautiful coastal trails. Cliffs, deserted beaches and wild nature. In the centre, the Serra de Sintra offers paths through palaces and enchanted forests. Every surf zone has spectacular trails just minutes away.
Portugal has the best food in Europe — and that's no exaggeration. Fresh seafood, grilled fish, seafood rice, cataplana in the Algarve. And of course: the pastel de nata, which is everywhere and never disappoints. Every coastal village has its hidden restaurants with dishes worth the trip.
Surf regions are surrounded by vineyards. In the West, the Torres Vedras region produces excellent wines. In the Algarve, Alentejo wines are just a few kilometres away. Local markets are another treasure — fresh fruit, cheese, cured meats and crafts.
Many coastal towns have cycle paths and skate parks. It's the perfect way to stay active while waiting for the next swell.
And when the waves return, Surf Booking has lessons available all along the Portuguese coast.
