Surfing in Portugal

Portugal is Europe's number one surf destination. Consistent waves all year round, water between 14°C and 20°C, and a unique surf culture.

Best time of year

Beginners: May to September. Smaller waves, warmer water, long days.

Intermediate: April to October. More swell, still manageable.

Year-round: There's always a beach with ideal conditions for any level. The instructor adapts the lesson to the day.

What to bring

In summer: 3/2mm wetsuit. In winter: 4/3mm with boots. Most schools provide everything, but if you surf regularly it's worth having your own.

Best zones

Peniche / Baleal: Consistent waves and schools for every taste.

Ericeira: World Surfing Reserve with stunning scenery.

Porto / Matosinhos: Urban surf with easy access.

Algarve: Warmer water and sheltered coasts.
