Right of way in the water
Just like in traffic, surfing has priority rules. Knowing them makes the experience better for everyone:
- Priority goes to whoever is closest to the peak (where the wave starts to break)
- No drop-ins — never catch a wave someone else is already riding
- The paddler heading out yields to the surfer riding the wave
- Never ditch your board — always keep control of your board for courtesy and safety
- Communicate — if you see someone in trouble, alert the lifeguard
Rip currents
Rip currents are channels of water that flow out to sea. It's useful to know how to identify them — your instructor will teach you all about this.
How to spot them:
- An area of darker water between the waves
- Water that looks calmer (no breaking waves) — that's where the current is
- Foam or debris moving out to sea
What to do if you get caught:
- Don't panic — the current doesn't pull you under, only outward
- Don't swim against the current — you'll exhaust yourself
- Swim parallel to the beach until you're out of the current
- Then swim diagonally back to shore
- If you can't manage, float and call for help by raising an arm
Beach flags
Learn to read the flags before entering the water:
- Green: Good conditions, swimming permitted
- Yellow: No swimming — wading at the water's edge only
- Red: No entering the water — wait for better conditions
- Chequered: Beach temporarily unguarded
