Your first surf lesson is booked. Now what? Relax — you don't need much. Certified schools provide the board and wetsuit. But there are things only you can bring.
The essentials
- Swimsuit — worn under the wetsuit. Comfortable, no buttons or zips that could hurt
- Towel — seems obvious, but many people forget. Bring a big one
- Sunscreen — SPF 50+, water-resistant. Apply 20 minutes before. Face, ears and the back of the neck burn the most
- Water — surfing is more tiring than it looks. Bring at least half a litre
Nice to have (but not essential)
- Rash guard — prevents wetsuit chafing on the neck and underarms. If it's your first time, the school will lend you one
- Flip-flops — so you don't burn your feet on the hot sand
- Waterproof bag — for your phone and keys
- Energy snack — a banana or cereal bar for after the lesson
What NOT to bring
- Watch or jewellery — they can break or get lost
- Sunglasses on your head — they'll end up at the bottom of the sea. Leave them in the car
- Fear — the instructor is there for that. Trust the process
On the day
Arrive 15 minutes early. The school gives a briefing on the sand: how to stand up, how to paddle, how to read the waves. Then, into the water! The first time you stand up is a moment you'll never forget.
