Surfing in Ericeira — complete guide to the World Surfing Reserve

Ericeira is Europe's only World Surfing Reserve — a title given by Save The Waves in 2011 recognising, at the time, only 5 zones in the world. Within 8 km between Coxos and São Lourenço fit 7 distinct waves, all a stone's throw from each other. It's Portugal's densest surf concentration.

But the title doesn't tell the whole story. Ericeira is also a village of 7000 people, cobblestone streets, south-facing restaurants, epic sunsets at Forte de Milreu, an authentic surf community that lives here year-round. You come once to surf, you come back because you got hooked on the place.

The 7 waves — where you can (and where you CAN'T) surf

Foz do Lizandro — The first-lesson beach. River mouth, flat sand, calm wave, parking, bar and toilets. Most Ericeira schools operate here. Ideal for beginners from start to end of summer.

Matadouro — Natural amphitheatre south of the village. Quality wave for beginner-intermediates and more technical privates. Steps access, no facilities — bring water.

Praia dos Pescadores (village centre) — Small, but on small-sea days one of the best spots for kids. Local schools use it for kids lessons.

Ribeira d'Ilhas — The most iconic wave. Long right, host of several editions of international WSL qualifying events. For intermediate surfers who already control paddling and pop-up.

São Lourenço — Long, powerful right, exposed. Stunning landscape. Advanced only.

Coxos — World-class right. Schools don't take lessons to Coxos. Go watch from the cliff, but don't try to enter without a local who knows the take-off and exit.

Pedra Branca — Technical reef break. Advanced-expert only.

What to expect from a lesson in Ericeira

Dry-land briefing (safety, sea reading, pop-up), 60 to 90 minutes in the water, end-of-lesson feedback. Equipment always included: foam board of the right thickness/length for your weight, 3/2mm wetsuit (summer) or 4/3mm (winter), leash. Some schools offer lesson photos as an extra.

Instructors at certified Ericeira schools are mostly locals with 10-20 years experience on the reserve's waves — they know where to put you on any day, any tide, any wind. It's the kind of knowledge you don't learn in a course.

What it costs

Group lesson: €40 to €55 per person (6:1 ratio, 90-120 min, equipment included).

Private lesson (1-on-1): €80 to €150 depending on school and duration.

Surf coaching with video: €100 to €150 — for intermediates who want to see themselves from outside and understand what to fix.

Kids lessons (8+): €40 to €50 with reinforced ratio (4:1).

When to go

May to September — summer. Small sea, water 18-20°C, sun guaranteed. Beaches busier but plenty of options. Ideal for beginners.

October to November — autumn. Crowd disappears, sea starts gaining size, water still 17-18°C. Favourite window for intermediates.

December to February — winter. Big North Atlantic swells. Foz do Lizandro stays sheltered on the right days for beginners; Ribeira d'Ilhas is firing most days for intermediates; Coxos and São Lourenço hit 4-6 metres for the pros. Water at 14°C, 4/3 wetsuit + boots.

March to April — spring. Cleaner sea, longer days, water climbing back to 16-17°C.

Where to stay

The village has hotels, guest houses, several surf houses and dozens of Airbnbs. Foz do Lizandro has beach-front accommodations, ideal for those who just want to surf. Ericeira centre is best for combining surf with restaurants and village life. Ribeira d'Ilhas has apartments a few minutes' walk from the wave — premium for intermediate surfers.

How to get there

From Lisbon: about 35 minutes by car via the A8, or a bit more via the coastal road (prettier). There's also a bus service between Lisbon and Ericeira.

Without a car: the bus works, but combining lessons across different Ericeira beaches during your stay gets complicated. Worth renting a car for 1-2 days if you're on a surf trip.
