I'm afraid of the sea. Can I still learn to surf?

Yes, and it's very common. A first lesson happens in waist-deep water, next to an instructor. Fear doesn't keep you out of surfing; going to the wrong place on the wrong day does.

Respecting the sea is a good sign. Many people who now surf every week arrived at their first lesson with a knot in their stomach. What helps is knowing what will happen before it happens.

A first lesson isn't out at sea

You learn in the whitewater, in waist-deep water or less. You can almost always touch the bottom. A beginner board is big and floats a lot: in practice, a buoy tied to your foot.

It starts on the sand

Good schools spend the first minutes on land: lying on the board, standing up, falling. By the time you're in the water, your body knows what to do.

The instructor is next to you

Group lessons have a maximum number of students per instructor; in a private lesson it's just you. Tell them you're scared. A good instructor slows down, stays closer and picks the waves for you.

Pick the right day and beach

Small sea, sandy beach. Surf Booking's forecast tells you, hour by hour, whether the sea works for a first lesson. And if the school cancels because of the sea, you get all your money back.
