When you say "Algarve", people think of sun, sangria and blue flags. But the Algarve has two coasts, facing different directions, with opposite surf conditions. And that's exactly why it's one of the most consistent regions in Europe: when one coast isn't firing, the other almost certainly is.
West Coast: raw surf, direct swell
From Aljezur to Sagres, the coast faces west. It picks up North Atlantic swell raw, unfiltered. The waves are powerful, with more punch than they look. Arrifana, Amoreira, Bordeira, Carrapateira are the classic spots. They work autumn to spring with strong swell and in summer with smaller, cleaner swell.
The West Coast asks for a bit more board (longboard or long soft top for beginners) and respect for the current. On big days it's not a first-lesson beach.
South Coast: the Algarve's "Mediterranean"
From Sagres to Vila Real de Santo António, the coast faces south. It's sheltered from North Atlantic swell by the entire west coast — what's bad for many is exactly what makes the south coast magic for beginners. Praia da Rocha, Praia da Luz, Mareta, Zavial pick up a smaller, more orderly swell.
On winter days when the west coast is walled with 4 metres, the south coast has 80cm-1m perfect for learning. It's the coast that keeps working when all others shut.
The beginner spots
Praia da Rocha (Portimão) — endless sand, schools with wetsuit and board included, small waves most of the year. Ideal first lesson. Praia da Luz (Lagos) — sheltered bay, gentle conditions, great for kids. Zavial (Vila do Bispo) — when it works, one of the most pedagogical waves in the country.
The side you don't see from the beach
Between Lagos and Albufeira, the rocky coast hides dozens of caves and arches only visible from the sea. Not surf spots — respect spots. If you SUP, kayak or paddle in calm water around Carvoeiro, Benagil, Marinha, you'll enter stone cathedrals nobody on the beach sees.
But be careful with the rising tide in caves: some fill up and seal the exit, and there have been serious accidents. Always check the tide before entering.
When to go
Beginners: April to October, south coast. Small waves, water up to 22°C in summer.
Intermediate and advanced: October to March, west coast. Consistent swell, water 14-17°C (4/3 wetsuit and boots).
Family: July to September, any coast. Calmer sea, schools with kids' lessons every day.
