Surfing in Portugal: Seasons and Best Conditions
Waves in Portugal - Seasonal surf guide

One of the great advantages of Portugal as a surf destination is the possibility of surfing all year round. However, conditions change dramatically between seasons, and knowing when to go can make all the difference to your experience. This seasonal guide helps you plan the perfect surf trip.

Spring (March – May)

Spring is one of the best times to surf in Portugal. The winter swells start to ease but there's still consistent swell.

  • Waves: 1–2 metres (occasionally larger in March)
  • Water temperature: 14°C–17°C
  • Wetsuit: 4/3mm in March, 3/2mm from May onwards
  • Best region: Peniche and Ericeira — consistent swell without the summer crowds

It's a fantastic time: good waves, quiet beaches and lower prices.

Summer (June – August)

Peak tourist season and the most popular time for surf lessons. Smaller waves and warmer water make summer the perfect time for beginners.

  • Waves: 0.5–1.5 metres (smaller and more predictable)
  • Water temperature: 17°C–20°C (can reach 22°C in the Algarve)
  • Wetsuit: 3/2mm or shortie (in the Algarve, boardshorts are possible)
  • Best region: Porto / Matosinhos, Costa da Caparica and the Algarve's west coast (Arrifana, Sagres) — schools for every taste

Tip: book in advance at popular beaches like Carcavelos and Baleal, especially in July and August.

Autumn (September – November)

Considered by many the best time of year for surfing in Portugal. The first Atlantic swells arrive while the water is still warm from summer.

  • Waves: 1–2.5 metres (more organised and consistent swells)
  • Water temperature: 17°C–19°C (September is still warm)
  • Wetsuit: 3/2mm in September/October, 4/3mm from November
  • Best region: Ericeira (world-class waves), Peniche (Supertubos at its best), Espinho (consistent beach breaks)

This is when the world championships are held (WSL in Peniche) and the waves are world-class. A fantastic time to surf in Portugal.

Winter (December – February)

Winter brings consistent swells from the North Atlantic. It's the season of Nazaré and iconic waves, and there are great options for all levels in more sheltered areas.

  • Waves: 2–4 metres (with peaks of 6+ metres on the exposed coast)
  • Water temperature: 13°C–15°C
  • Wetsuit: 4/3mm with boots (5/4mm in the North)
  • Best region: Algarve (Sagres, Arrifana — more sheltered from big swells), Espinho for those who enjoy winter waves in the North

For beginners, winter in the Algarve is surprisingly good: fewer tourists, manageable waves and water 2–3°C warmer than in the North.

Summary: when to go

  • Summer (Jun–Sep): Gentler waves, warm water, long days — perfect for getting started
  • Spring/Autumn: Best balance between waves and quiet beaches
  • Winter: Consistent Atlantic swells, quiet beaches, lower prices

Regardless of the season, there's always a beach in Portugal with conditions for your level. Check the real-time conditions on Surf Booking to find the best wave today.
