Taking the kids surfing for the first time is one of the most memorable gifts you can give them. But there are rules — pedagogical, safety, federation. Here they all are, so you arrive at the beach prepared.
Most schools accept children from age 6 in dedicated group lessons, and some run private lessons from age 5. Golden rule: the child has to swim a little and like the water. Forcing doesn't work — surf will get associated with stress.
— Reinforced ratio — 1 instructor per 4 children (safety rule), instead of 1:6 for adults
— Adapted equipment — smaller boards, fitted suits, kids' leashes
— Briefing as a game — instructor turns safety into play, not a lecture
— Shorter water time — 60–75 min instead of 90, with hydration breaks
— Always foam — no rigid board in a first lesson
— Carcavelos (Cascais) — calm wave, flat sand, snack-bar 50 metres away
— Costa da Caparica — multiple beaches with schools, easy access from Lisbon
— Foz do Lizandro (Ericeira) — family atmosphere, restaurants on the beach
— Matosinhos — urban, near the metro, easy to combine with restaurants
— Praia da Falésia (Algarve) — gentle summer waves, warm water
Extra towel, snack, water, water-resistant sunscreen, sandals. Don't bring: own boards (the school has the right ones), own suits (the school has the right size), expectations of "Patrick Swayze movie". The first lesson is fun.
Kids lessons in Portugal cost between €25 and €45 per group lesson, depending on the zone. Packs of 3 or 5 lessons come 15–20% cheaper — worth it if the child enjoys. See all average prices.
Many schools offer weekly camps during school holidays — morning lessons + beach activities + lunch. Ideal for those wanting 1 immersion week. Book early: July/August camps fill up in May.
