In Peniche there are beaches for everyone. But Supertubos is in a category of its own. When it fires, it's one of the most perfect, hollow waves in Europe — a fast right with a clean tube opening over a sand bottom, able to host the best surfing on the planet.
Why it's special
The geography is simple and brutal: deep sand bottom right at the shoreline. There's no reef to the south to shelter — the swell arrives raw, jacks up the wave from nothing and unloads it on a vertical wall. The result is a wave that tubes on nearly every set, 30-40 metres off the sand.
It's the only Portuguese beach that regularly hosts WSL Championship Tour stops — the world tour for the top 32. When you see a contest in Peniche on TV, it's Supertubos.
When it works
It doesn't work every day. It needs specific conditions:
Swell: northwest 1.5-2.5 metres, mid period (10-13s). Above 3m it gets huge and closed-out. Below 1m it gets short.
Wind: east/northeast cleans the face and opens the tube. North ruins it. South too.
Tide: mid-tide outgoing is the magic window. Low tide exposes dangerous sand; high tide softens the wave.
When all three align, the spot works for 4-5 hours. The rest of the time it's just "decent".
Who Supertubos is for
Honestly: solid intermediate and up. It's not a beach to learn on. The wave breaks hard, closes fast, and has current. If you can't duck dive confidently and paddle 200m without stopping, it's not your spot — at least not to surf.
But it's absolutely a spot to come and watch. The cliff-top car park above the beach is one of the best surf grandstands in Europe. On good days, there are always 5-6 pros training.
Where to stay
Peniche and Baleal sit a few minutes apart, and that's where most of the schools and accommodation are. If you're going to learn, head to Baleal — gentler beaches, smaller waves, schools everywhere. If you're going to see Supertubos, leave early, follow the coast south, and in 5 minutes you're there.
Beginner alternatives in Peniche
The good news: a few kilometres from Supertubos there are much more approachable beaches. Baleal Norte and Cantinho da Baía are classic first-lesson spots. Several certified schools run lessons daily with gear included.
