Migas Surf School — Praia da Vagueira, Vagos

On Praia da Vagueira, in Vagos, the person teaching is a three-time national bodysurfing champion.

Some surf schools set up on a beach. Others come out of one. Migas Surf School is the second kind, and it shows in everything they do.

Praia da Vagueira sits in Vagos, in the Aveiro district, on a stretch of coast most surf guides skip. It is an end-of-the-road beach, open ocean in front and the Ria lagoon behind, with salt and traditional boats in the landscape. It is not Ericeira and it is not Nazaré, and it does not want to be. It is a working seafront, where the wave is good on more days than the magazines admit.

The founder — Miguel Rocha, «Migas»

The school carries his name for a simple reason: he built it. Miguel Rocha is a three-time national bodysurfing champion2016, 2017 and 2018. Three years running.

That is worth pausing on, because bodysurfing is not a line on a CV. It is the barest way to catch a wave: no board, no leash, nothing between the person and the water. Anyone who wins a national title doing that three years in a row reads the ocean in a way no six-month course teaches — they know where the wave will break before it decides, where the rip is without looking, and when the sea is not in the mood. That is the eye he brings into a beginner's lesson.

Four disciplines, and not to fill a poster

Migas teaches surf, bodysurf, bodyboard and skate. Four doors into the same place, each one for a different person.

Bodysurfing is the house signature — the founder's own discipline, and the best way there is to understand a wave from the inside before putting a board under it. Bodyboarding is, for many people, the first time they feel real wave speed. Skate is the land training: on days the ocean says no, you still work stance, rotation and weight through the feet — which is where half of surfing is decided.

It is surf for every level and every age, and the timetable shows it: kids classes and adults classes, in groups that never go past eight. Morning and late-afternoon lessons — 9am, 10am, 11am and 6pm, depending on the day and the tide.

Certified, with the number in plain sight

The school is certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation and operates under RNAAT no. 147/2021 — the national register for tourism-activity operators. That is not decorative paperwork: it is what separates a school from a group of friends with boards. It means insurance, it means declared responsibility, and it means there is a name and a number behind the lesson you bought.

Around 150 students come through the school regularly. For a beach the size of Vagueira, that is not a modest number — that is the whole beach learning to surf.

The school the region adopted

There is one signal marketing cannot buy: when local institutions start counting on you. Migas appears in the official trails of Rota da Luz and the Grande Rota da Ria de Aveiro, and in Estações Náuticas de Portugal. Companies from the region take their teams there for days in the water — Altice Labs, based in Aveiro, has written about it more than once.

And in October 2024 Praia da Vagueira hosted surf competitions. A beach that becomes a championship venue rarely gets there on its own: it gets there because somebody, for years, put people in the water every single day.

Where they teach

Based on Praia da Vagueira, in Vagos — Urbanização Rainha Santa, right by the sand. The school runs from 08:00 to 20:00, which in practice means the lesson is booked for the hour the ocean is good, not the hour the school happens to be open. That is a difference only an owner-run school can offer.

Why this matters to us

Surf Booking is not collecting schools to make a bigger number. We are looking for schools where the person teaching genuinely knows what they are doing — and where there is a real beach and real people behind them. Migas is both.

From now on, Migas Surf School lessons appear on Surf Booking with the same information we give any lesson: the forecast for the exact hour of the class, the tide, the recommended level, and confirmation with a check-in code. Booking on the phone, payment on the spot, and the school gets its day organised on the other side.
