"When is the best time to surf in Portugal?" is probably the most frequent question from anyone landing in Lisbon for the first time with a board under their arm. The honest answer is every month — but each month has its own surf, its own crowd, its own water temperature, and its own reason for being the best.
Small swell, predictable north wind, water reaching 19–20°C, huge daylight hours. It's the beginner season. If you've never put a board in the water, this is your time. Packed beaches, schools at full capacity, mass transport from Lisbon to Costa da Caparica and Ericeira. Waves rarely pass 1 m on lesson beaches — exactly what's wanted.
The crowd is gone. Water still at 18°C. Swell picks up slightly — perfect for those past their first lesson who want to see themselves in 1m–1.2m waves. Instructors love this season — consistent sea, motivated students, without the summer chaos.
Nazaré, North Canyon, big waves. For most surfers it's the time to watch, not surf. But there are always sheltered beaches with 0.8m–1m where you can learn — Matosinhos, Costa da Caparica, some Ericeira spots. Water at 14°C, 4/3mm wetsuit with boots. Lessons run year-round — the school picks the right spot.
The Atlantic still sends swells, but the wind starts to favour you. Water climbing back to 16–17°C. Favourite window for many intermediates — still some size in the waves, but you can spend full mornings in the water without freezing.
Define what you want. First lesson? May to September. Already surf and want to improve? Autumn or spring. Going to Nazaré to watch the giant waves? December to February. And in any case, check Surf Today — it shows you the actual conditions on every beach, right now.
