On Instagram, everyone surfs like a pro after one lesson. In real life, the path is longer — but also far more rewarding. Here's the truth about progression in surfing.
Your first lessons are in the whitewash. Waves will be pushed towards you, you'll practise the pop-up, and you'll fall. A lot. That's how it is for everyone. If you stand up on your first lesson — congratulations, you're above average.
You start catching green waves (unbroken waves). Timing is everything — paddling too early or too late makes all the difference. This is where an instructor is worth their weight in gold: they correct your positioning, timing and where you're looking.
You start reading waves on your own. You know where to sit, when to paddle, how to turn on the wave. The foam board gives way to a smaller board. This is the moment surfing stops being exercise and becomes addictive.
From here on, every session is different. The ocean is never the same. That's what makes surfing so special — you're always learning, even after 20 years.
Most schools on Surf Booking offer packs of 3 to 10 lessons with progressive discounts. It's the best way to ensure consistency in your progression. Some schools have progression levels with badges — like a game, but in real life.
