Costa da Caparica has a long line of numbered beach spots — Apoio 1, 2, 3, 4… opening the sand to the Atlantic over kilometres of coastline. At Apoio 12, Praia do CDS, with feet firmly planted in the sand for more than 16 years, sits BSA — Barrel Surf Academy. One of the longest-running schools on the south margin of Lisbon, and one that best embodies what it means to teach surf as a craft, not as entertainment.
BSA was founded on February 12, 2009. The original name — Barbas Surf Academy — came from a partnership with the iconic "O Barbas" restaurant in Costa da Caparica. Today, the school operates under the Barrel Surf Academy brand: the same team, the same Apoio 12, the same pedagogical demand that grew on that sand from day one.
They started with 2 instructors and 15 students in 2010. By 2014, five years later, they had over 150 regular students, 6 credentialed trainers, and their own admin staff. Organic growth — no marketing explosion, no cheap promises. Just steady pedagogy and a team that stayed loyal to the sea and to its students.
The school is at Praia do CDS — Apoio 12, Costa da Caparica. CDS is one of the best beach spots for teaching surf on the south margin: open sand, clean sandy bottom, moderate exposure to NW swell that delivers workable waves almost year-round — without the aggression that makes other beaches unworkable for beginners.
25 minutes by car from Lisbon via the 25 de Abril bridge — the natural choice for those living in the city who want lessons without losing a full day to travel. Caparica isn't the Instagram pick; it's the pick of those who want to surf regularly.
— Group lessons at level-based safety ratios (1:6 beginner, 1:8 intermediate/advanced, 1:4 kids and private)
— Private / individual lessons for full attention or focused progression at a specific technical level
— Student packages with volume discount — for those who want 8, 10 or 16 sessions to build consistency
— Equipment rental (board, wetsuit, leash) for autonomous surfers wanting to hit the water in Caparica
— AM-PRO — programme launched in 2018, structured high-performance training for competition athletes
Equipment (board + wetsuit) and insurance always included. Ages range from 5 to 70 — from the kid who watches a sibling enter the water and wants to try, to the adult returning to the sea decades later, deserving an instructor who respects their pace.
Instructors are certified by the Portuguese Surf Federation. BSA's philosophy is simple and openly stated since day one: knowledge, experience, professionalism, and innovative services. It's not catalogue talk — it's what explains the growth from 15 to 150+ regular students in just 5 years.
Each lesson adapts to the student's technical level and learning pace. Safety first. Enjoyment right after. Knowledge of surf principles as the structural foundation. No skipping steps to impress, no pushing students into waves they aren't ready for, and no taking the photo before the student has earned the wave.
In 2015, BSA built its own competition team for national and regional championships. In 2018, they created the AM-PRO project — structured training for surfers wanting to move from amateur to competitive, with annual programming, video analysis, and complementary physical preparation.
It's rare to find this at a commercial school: most stop at beginner classes because that's where the volume sits. BSA chose to build the complete path — from first step on the board to the national circuit — for those who want to go further.
The school has active partnerships with Matta Surfboards (Portuguese reference shaper) and Billabong Portugal. It was official organiser and partner of the Hungarian Surf Fest in 2022 and 2023 — confirmation that the work done at Apoio 12 in Caparica is recognised beyond Portuguese borders, and that international communities choose Portugal through BSA's hand.
If you've never touched a board, you'll have an instructor who has taken hundreds of people through exactly that first time — and knows how to ease the fear of the sea without hiding it. If you've been surfing for years and want to polish your backside or take-off in bigger waves, here's someone who walks that path with you instead of pushing you into another whitewater lesson. If you want to compete, there's a programme that picks you up and takes you there.
It's rare to find a school that does all three paths with the same care. BSA — Barrel Surf Academy does.
