Surf lessons in Peniche and Baleal — 2026 guide

Peniche is considered Portugal's surf capital. World Surf Tour stop (Supertubos), huge community, certified schools on every corner, reasonable prices. Here's the honest guide.

Baleal — where you learn

Baleal is a peninsula with beaches on both sides — perfect because there's always one sheltered from the wind. Praia da Cova de Alfarroba and Baleal Sul are the classic beginner picks. Calm wave, flat sand, predictable bottom.

Over 30 certified schools operate here. Average €30–€45 per group lesson — cheaper than Lisbon or the Algarve.

Supertubos — where you DON'T take lessons

Supertubos is the world-class wave. Perfect tubes, heavy, sandbar that can shift fast. Not for beginners. Schools take advanced coaching here on the right days, but for first lessons you always go to Baleal.

Worth going to watch Supertubos in October/November during the WSL — one of Europe's most spectacular surf experiences.

Other Peniche beaches

Lagide — technical wave, for intermediates and advanced surfers

Almagreira — long beach, multiple peaks, good for all levels

Molhe Leste — alternative when wind doesn't favour Baleal

What it costs

Group lesson €30–€45 (cheaper than other zones)

Private lesson €70–€120

5-lesson pack typically €150–€180 (save 15-25%)

Where to stay
