Surf lessons in the Algarve — Sagres, Aljezur, Lagos

The Algarve is Portugal's hottest surf destination — literally. Water reaching 21–22°C in summer, sunshine almost guaranteed, waves for every level. Here's the guide for your next surf trip south.
Vicentine Coast — where the waves are
The Vicentine Coast (between Aljezur and Sagres) is the main surf zone. Wild beaches, dramatic cliffs, consistent waves. Not the south coast (Lagos, Albufeira) — that one has little swell.
Sagres — to start
Sagres has most of the surf schools. Praia do Tonel, Praia do Beliche and Praia da Mareta are the classic lesson beaches. Schools pick the best by wind — and Sagres always has one that works.
Prices €40–€60 for group lessons. Private lessons €100–€150.
Aljezur — Arrifana and Monte Clérigo
Arrifana is the Algarve's most famous wave. Natural amphitheatre, stunning landscape. Monte Clérigo has gentler waves, perfect for beginners on big-sea days elsewhere.
Several schools run between both beaches. Prices similar to Sagres.
Lagos and the south coast
The south coast (Lagos, Albufeira, Faro) has little swell — the headlands block waves coming from the Atlantic. Schools in Lagos almost always drive students to the Vicentine Coast (45 min by car).
Worth it if you stay in Lagos for tourism (nightlife, restaurants) — but consider Sagres or Aljezur if surf is the priority.
When to go
— May to September — warm water (19–22°C), long days, small to medium waves. Ideal for beginners.
— October to April — bigger swells, colder water (16–18°C). Better for intermediates.
— January–February — some big-wave days at Carrapateira and Castelejo. To watch, not to learn.
How to combine with holidays
The Algarve is unique: surf in the morning, lunch at a seafood place in Sagres, beach in the afternoon, sunset wine in Vila do Bispo. Schools typically run lessons in the morning (8am–11am) or late afternoon, leaving the rest of the day free.
