Arrifana sits in Aljezur, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park — the wildest, best-preserved stretch of coastline in Europe. No concrete blocking the view. Cliff, dunes, and a northwest-facing bay that does two things at once: it catches the Atlantic swell and hides from the north wind that ruins so many mornings elsewhere in the Algarve and along the Lisbon coast.

The method

Every lesson starts on land — safety briefing, reading the day's sea, fundamentals. Only then does the water start, where most of the time is spent. Soft-top board on the first lesson, always. Repetition, correction, and an instructor pushing, fixing posture and celebrating every wave. A foundation properly laid is what separates those who quit by the third lesson from those who stay for life.

When to go

— Summer (June-September): the best time to start. Warming water, long days, smaller and tidier waves. Ideal for the camp and for combining holidays with learning.

— Autumn (October-November): consistent swell, fewer people, still-warm water. The favourite season for those who already surf and want to progress.

— Winter and Spring: the sheltered bay keeps offering surfable days when the open west is too big. A thicker wetsuit, a more serious sea, but there's always a window.
