Surfer in Portugal practical guide

Planning your first surf trip to Portugal? Excellent choice. Here you'll find everything you need to know to arrive prepared and make the most of it.

Visa and documents

Portugal is part of the European Union and the Schengen Area. EU citizens don't need a visa — just an ID card or passport. Citizens of the USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia and many other countries can enter without a visa for stays up to 90 days.

Currency and payments

The currency is the Euro. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere. ATMs (Multibanco) are available in every town. Tips are not mandatory — but rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% at a restaurant is appreciated.

Transport

Renting a car is the most practical way to explore the coast — prices are affordable and the roads are good. If you prefer not to drive, trains connect Lisbon to Porto and to many coastal towns. Uber works in the larger cities.

Communications

Prepaid SIM cards are cheap and easy to buy at any telecoms shop. With European roaming, EU citizens use their normal plan. Free Wi-Fi is available at most cafes and accommodation.

Language

The Portuguese speak excellent English — especially in tourist and surf areas. Learning a few words in Portuguese (obrigado, bom dia, uma cerveja por favor) is always appreciated and opens doors.

Book the lesson before you arrive

The best tip: book your surf lesson before you land. That way you guarantee a spot, choose the time that suits you and arrive at the beach stress-free.
