Surfing alone vs with a school? What nobody tells you

Surf lesson

Everyone knows someone who "learned on their own". And that person probably still does the pop-up with the wrong foot. Surfing looks simple — a board, a wave, stand up. But the details make all the difference.

What you learn on your own

Without instruction, you learn by trial and error. You'll catch whitewash, you'll fall, and eventually you'll manage to stand. It can take weeks or months. And you'll be missing the fundamentals.

What only an instructor teaches you

  • Correct positioning — where to sit in the lineup, how to read the sets, when to paddle
  • Pop-up technique — the movement of standing up is counter-intuitive. A mistake early on becomes a habit that takes months to correct
  • Safety — water etiquette, priorities and best practices in the sea
  • Reading the ocean — understanding tides, wind and how they affect the waves at your beach
  • Etiquette — the unwritten rules that prevent conflicts in the water

The investment

A group lesson costs between €25 and €45. It includes board, wetsuit, insurance and 2 hours of instruction. Buying a foam board costs €200-400, plus a wetsuit (€150-300), plus a leash (€25). And then you're alone in the sea without knowing what to do.

3 to 5 lessons with a school give you the foundation to surf independently and safely. It's the best investment you can make in surfing.
