300 days of sun, prices you can afford, consistent waves and the best food in Europe. Portugal wins. 15 aprile 2026 · 1 min di lettura
Europe has fantastic surf destinations — but Portugal stands out clearly. If you're planning your next surf trip and hesitating between Portugal, Spain or France, here are the facts.
Price — Portugal is unbeatable
A surf lesson in Portugal costs between 25 and 45 euros. In France (Biarritz, Hossegor), prices easily climb to 60-80 euros. In Spain (Basque Country), they hover around 50-65 euros. Accommodation and food follow the same trend — Portugal offers far more for less.
Water temperature
In the Algarve, the water reaches 22 degrees in summer. On the west coast, the summer's 17-19 degrees are comfortable with a good wetsuit — and in winter, Portuguese water generally stays milder than in southwest France.
Wave consistency
Portugal receives North Atlantic swell almost year-round. In winter, big and powerful waves. In summer, gentler waves perfect for learning. With over 800km of coast, there's always a beach working — regardless of swell direction.
Food, culture and hospitality
Portuguese cuisine is world-renowned. Fresh seafood at honest prices, excellent wines and a unique cafe and pastry culture. The Portuguese are known for being welcoming — and nearly everyone speaks English.
Safety
Portugal is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in the world. You can leave your things on the beach, walk at night and travel solo without worries.
