Peniche is a peninsula — it has north-facing and south-facing beaches minutes apart.

There is one thing about Peniche that is almost never explained to someone about to take a first lesson, and it decides half the days of the year: Peniche is a peninsula.
That is not pretty geography — it is the reason there are waves there almost every day. A tongue of land reaching into the Atlantic has north-facing and south-facing beaches a few minutes apart. When the wind ruins one side, the other is sheltered. That is why Peniche has a reputation for having surf when the rest of the country does not.
The school is at Consolação. Our own record for that beach says what it is: “beach break and reef break on the south side of Peniche, fast and powerful waves, less crowded than Baleal and Supertubos”. Sand and rock bottom.
Those two lines say a lot to anyone choosing where to learn. Less crowded means more room for a class without sharing the peak with half the world — and in a beginner lesson, room is half of safety. And being on the south side means that on the days the north wind sweeps the famous beaches, this one still runs lessons.
It is worth looking at the logo before going on, because it explains the house without a word: an anchor whose shank is a castle tower, battlements and all. Sea and castle, both things in one figure. Whoever drew that thought about it.
The school's full name is Seacastle — Surf, Fitness & Wellness, and that is not a long name by accident. Alongside surf lessons there is stand-up paddle, yoga and pilates.
It is worth understanding why that matters more than it looks. Anyone coming for a week of surfing will almost certainly hit a day or two when the sea does not work — too big, too windy, or too flat. In a school that only teaches surf, that day is lost. Here there is somewhere to go: a stand-up on a glassy day, or a class on land for the body the ocean just worked. It is the difference between a five-day week and a seven-day one.
Lessons are for people who have never stood up and for people who already surf: instructors take you from paddling to standing on the board, and equipment is included — board and wetsuit, nothing to bring. The house is open every day, 09:30 to 19:00.
Consolação, Peniche. The meeting point is Av. da Praia 1, 2525-431 Atouguia da Baleia. The town of Peniche is right there; Lisbon is a little over an hour and a half away.
Because choosing the beach is half the lesson, and a school on the right side of the peninsula on the right day gives you ocean when another one sends you a cancellation message. And because if you come for a few days, what stays with you is not only the wave: it is having had something to do, every day, with the sea in front of you.
