Winter surfing in Portugal — where and when to surf in the cold months

While the rest of Europe closes its beaches, Portugal lights up. Winter (October to March) brings the best Atlantic swell — consistent waves and beaches almost all to yourself.

Why surf in winter?

  • Consistent waves — north-west swell delivers regular good conditions
  • Fewer tourists — the beaches are yours
  • Lower prices — accommodation and lessons at a discount
  • Water temperature — 14-16°C with a 4/3mm wetsuit is comfortable

Best zones by month

October-November: Ericeira and Peniche — swell starts arriving, water still mild.

December-January: Cascais and Nazaré — big waves, epic sessions at Guincho and Carcavelos.

February-March: Algarve — sheltered coast with warmer water, ideal for lessons.

Essential equipment

4/3mm wetsuit (or 5/3mm in the north), neoprene boots, and optional gloves. Most schools on Surf Booking include wetsuit and board in the lesson price.
