Your first surf lesson is an unforgettable experience. But it's normal to have questions: what should I wear? Do I need to bring a board? Will I actually stand up? This guide answers everything so you arrive at the beach prepared and confident.
What to wear and bring
The school provides all the equipment: a wetsuit and a foam board (soft board), which is safer for beginners. You just need to bring:
- Swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit
- Towel and flip-flops
- Water-resistant sunscreen (face and ears)
- Water bottle
- A good attitude — you'll fall plenty of times and that's part of the fun!
The wetsuit is chosen based on your weight and height. In summer a 3/2mm is used, in winter a 4/3mm with boots. The school takes care of everything.
How the lesson works
A typical beginner surf lesson lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours and follows this structure:
- Warm-up on the sand (15 min): Stretching and exercises to prepare your body.
- Technique on the sand (20 min): The instructor teaches the pop-up (how to stand on the board), foot position, balance and safety rules.
- Practice in the water (60–80 min): You head into the water with the instructor. You start lying on the board catching whitewash (already broken waves) and progress towards standing up.
- Debriefing (10 min): Instructor feedback, tips to improve and next steps.
Safety rules
Safety is the priority. In Portugal, surf schools follow clear rules, aligned with sector regulations:
- SB ratio, the one SurfBooking applies: max 6 beginners · 8 intermediate/advanced · 4 kids (<12) · 4 private, per instructor
- Instructors with recognised federation certification (Grades I, II or III) or equivalent
- Mandatory liability insurance
- Sea conditions assessed before every lesson to ensure the best experience
- Foam boards (soft boards) mandatory for beginners
Choosing a certified school isn't just about quality — it's about safety. On Surf Booking, all partner schools meet these standards.
How much does it cost
Prices vary by region and lesson type:
- Group lesson: €25–€55 (equipment included)
- Private lesson: €60–€120 (faster progression)
- 5-lesson pack: 15–25% discount on the unit price
The North tends to be more affordable, while areas like Ericeira and the Algarve charge higher prices in peak season.
Will I manage to stand up?
Yes! The vast majority of students manage to stand up on their first lesson, even if only for a few seconds. The large foam boards (8 to 9 feet) are very stable and the whitewash is predictable. The secret is to relax, trust the instructor and have fun.
