Falling well: how to come off your board without getting hurt
Este artículo todavía no está en español. Lo estás leyendo en inglés.
In a first lesson you fall more often than you stand, and that's fine. Falling well can be learned: five habits that protect your head, your feet and your confidence. 29 de octubre de 2026 · 1 min de lectura
Nobody tells you this before your first lesson: you'll fall a lot. Falling is part of learning, and falls in the whitewater are almost always soft. What matters is falling the right way, because that's what keeps you climbing back on.
1 · Fall to the side or backwards, never forwards
Falling forwards puts you between the board and the wave, which is exactly where the board goes next.
2 · In shallow water, fall flat
Never dive head first. Where you learn, the water can be knee deep. Fall on your back or side, body stretched out.
3 · Cover your head as you come up
Your board is tied to your foot by the leash and may be right above you. Two seconds of arms over your head prevent the most common scare of first lessons.
4 · Look before you stand up
Check the sea before you reach for the board. If another wave is coming, hold the board beside you, never between you and the whitewater.
5 · On reef, fall like a starfish
Over rock, fall as flat as you can, arms and legs spread. Beginner lessons rarely face this: schools start on sandy beaches.
